Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is supplying a monographic presentation of transformation in the press of city of Cracow in the years 1989-1998 with special focus on aspects of market and culture, as well as demonstration of the relations between the press, the institutions of government and the social context. The scope of interest includes all the magazines published either in Cracow itself or by Cracovian publishers in the investigated period [with total of 1838 titles, incl. 10 information newspapers, 133 magazines dealing with social and political affairs, 214 ones regarding religious issues, 129 magazines on cultural matters, 85 sublocal titles, 82 advertising titles, 45 sport titles and 524 research, special interest and other publications]. The main problem encountered was how to determine the effect exerted by the transformation of society, government and economy upon the contemporary Cracow's press. The scope of the study regarded particular modes of evolution in the qualitative and quantitative press structure and the evolution of the model of its readership. The development of the media institutions [publishing companies, editorial staffs] has been investigated and described herein as well as the influence of the liberal economy on their functioning and inflow of foreign capital and technological progress. The evolution of press messages and their relations with the contemporary social and cultural reality is also examined by empirical means. The dominant research strategy, constituting the foundation of the investigation on the Cracow's press market, became the descriptive procedures, commonly used in studies of history of press. The thesis contains nine chapters where respective types of publications have been discussed and grouped according to the similarity criterion. Keywords: Polish press, Cracow, 20th century, transformation, political transformation
